OUr History

Background by Mayme Ohnemus from Sexy Senior Dumpster Cleaner Friends Helping Friends second edition cookbook printed in October of 2008 with additions by Mona Painter.

The idea of a senior center was tossed around for some time before we actually knuckled down and got to work holding an organizational meeting at Mona Painter’s home June 1, 1999. The purpose: to support and encourage the well-being of all persons 55 years of age and older in the Cooper Landing area. Safe housing and transportation were identified as immediate needs for the well-being of area seniors.

It was decided the Community hall would be a good place to hold meetings if we could secure funding to modernize the facility with a kitchen/bathroom addition. A legislative grant provided money needed to build the modern addition onto the Community Hall in 2000. The seniors use the community hall for general meetings and fundraising activities.

Senior shuttle bus service to and from Soldotna was started Sept. 2000 during the winter months with Mary Fort driving the Fort’s Northern Excursion van. In 2002, CLSCCI received a bus from grant funds from the Alaska Dept. of Transportation and Public Facilities. The bus, named the Chariot, seats 10 passengers and has a hydraulic lift and two wheelchair tie downs. The Chariot also hauls volunteers every Monday to and from work at the transfer sites in Cooper Landing, Hope, and Moose Pass. Monies earned from cleaning the sites goes into CLSCCI’s general fund. Excursions to Anchorage , Homer, Seward and other places, including to Cooper Landing School programs and other local events are made by the bus on special occasions.

Building Senior Housing

Building a senior center on the Snug Harbor Senior Haven property was CLSCCI’s next goal. Eagles View and Ravens View, two units of independent senior housing, were constructed with funds from Alaska Housing Finance Corp., Kenai Peninsula Borough (HUD), the Alaska State Legislature, the Denali Commission, and CLSCCI. The housing is located off Snug Harbor Road in Snug Harbor Senior Haven on 12.5 acres purchased from the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Eagles View opened in April 2006 and Ravens View followed in May 2009. Each unit contains six apartments with a commons area. CLSCCI’s office is located in Helen Gwin Commons, Eagles View.
